Beautiful like a song

Cobbles glisten in the evening rain, leaf litter blocking the gutters and causing unshod feet to slip. Ragged men stagger home from the workhouses, brushed aside by the clicking wheels of the hansom cabs. Horses duck their heads, snorting plumes of wet, straw scented heat as the human traffic pushes past them and always, everywhere, above it and beyond it all, is the stink of the river Avon as its turgid flow seeps beneath the bridges. The river itself remains a dark, indifferent consciousness that allows anyone to stand by its weir and stare into the silent currents.

A laugh.

"My cousins are of the sea, not I. Or perhaps I would be an albatross, an osprey... hunter of air and sea... but to give you your answer... Fly! Always fly! Through the storm... see me fly!"

She grins, her eyes dreamy.

He chuckles

"The strangest thing I have ever heard? That I would get used to this life...or that flying would lose it's joy."

He shakes his head, grinning.

"Tell me your first impression of me."

It takes Christine a few moments to respond, her brow furrowed.

"...I thought that you were either incredibly brave, or incredibly foolish... to announce to Lady Leverson and myself that you were newly arrived and wanted to hunt Sabbat... I am not good at tactics, but even I know that it is a bad idea to let strangers into your confidence... what if you were a spy?"

Her tone is mild, slightly distant.

"...and then saying that you listened to my music as a raven... ravens aren't known for their musicality... far from it... Honestly? I am surprised that we are talking here and now, given first impressions... and that was before the javelin lesson... "

She looks over at him, like he is a bit of a mystery to her.

"Tell me - have I offended you?"

Regulus nods

"Being brave and bring foolish are often the same thing in different situations. Though it is true that I am a fool, well as far as my actions in the civilised world at any rate. I do regret what was said, but am pleased we are able to converse now."

He tilts his head, adjusting his glasses once more.

"Not that I can recall. I fear it is rather I who offended you."

He scratches his forearm.

"Tell me, are you glad you were embraced?"

She waves a hand, waving away any concern.

"I meant what I said... we are friends now..."

She smiles happily at him, then her brow furrows as she considers his question.

"...my embrace... was a means to an end... and nothing more... but it gave me back my music... so... yes? I think so?"

She sounds dubious, but not concerned.

"Tell me... your favourite colour."

"Black. Although that might be considered an absence of colour...so dark green. There is something about it that reminds me of the Tundra."

He glances up at the night sky

"Tell me somewhere you have always wanted to visit."

A smile, as she smoothes the fabric of her dark green skirts.

"...visit... hmmm... New York... "

"Tell me... why have you never been in love?"

"I never met a woman I thought didn't see my money first. I always wanted to meet someone who could hold a long conversation about a variety of topics."

He sighs, smiling sadly.

"Tell me, do you think we still have souls?"

An impish smile, slightly teasing.

"...well, I don't know about you... but I do."

Another pause for thought as she pushes a loose tendril of hair behind her ear.

"Tell me... do you believe in fairies?"

There's a slight intensity to that question that has been absent from the others.

"Yes. Only a fool would deny the Fae exist."

He takes off his glasses and carefully wipes at the lenses.

"Tell me, have you ever embraced?"
