Valentina's own aura suffuses with pleasure, both for the promise of a story and the fact that Dukes has acknowledged the after party. She settles back in her seat, ready to enjoy the tram ride and content to let her elders take the conversational lead.

The Sheriff turns to the Architect, not letting his eyes meet the women sat to his side.
"It's a good story, trust me."
He turns back to the window, resting his head against it with an audible thunk.

This time, Aurelia fails to stifle her laughter.

[Manacledairman]

[Madam Zaragoza]

“Oh come now. Let the man be for a while. He has promised us a story later. Let him have some solitude. Well as least as much as can be allowed squashed into this contraption.”
She allows herself a wry smile though.

[Manacledairman]

"of course Elder Zaragoza, I'm just expressing my excitement."

His smile returns

"And I am also exceptionally glad this cramped contraption is being pulled by horses. I feel this hasn't been stated enough."

“Oh no!” Aurelia feigns horror, and immediately puts her arm around Dukes. “Is this so uncomfortable, Sheriff? I didn’t realise you didn’t want to be back here. It looks so cosy.”

The Sheriff, trapped, retrieves a flat-cap from his satchel, pulls it tightly over his head, and shrinks into his coat until no sign of his face remains.
he mutters from the woolen depths.

[L .]

“Perhaps he thinks you need a woman in your life, neh? Or something beyond books alone. Trust me, I am obsessed with ancient lore, and books, but there is much to be said for a good shag.”

She manages to deliver this entire retort absolutely devoid of tone.
