A Breeze on the Water

Cobbles glisten in the evening rain, leaf litter blocking the gutters and causing unshod feet to slip. Ragged men stagger home from the workhouses, brushed aside by the clicking wheels of the hansom cabs. Horses duck their heads, snorting plumes of wet, straw scented heat as the human traffic pushes past them and always, everywhere, above it and beyond it all, is the stink of the river Avon as its turgid flow seeps beneath the bridges. The river itself remains a dark, indifferent consciousness that allows anyone to stand by its weir and stare into the silent currents.

He shrugs

“For the most part I could take or leave the Toreodor...apart from the Justicar. She seems most pleasant.”

Regulus sighs, blinking slowly. He lets his head drop down for a moment. A long exhale forces all the air out of his body, another long breath once more fills his lungs.

“True enough Ms Melody. True enough.”

Shaking his head, Regulus’s eyes clear and he comes back to the present.

“Do you have any notable performances coming up Ms Melody? I intend to attend soon to keep up the murmurs among the regular patrons.”

Now take your own advice, Christine, and learn and move on...

For a moment, a wave of fondness sweeps through her for the Gangrel at her side. She smiles.

"...oh... I am so glad we had the chance to talk! You are such a good friend.... thank you!"

She tilts her head.

"...just the usual performances, in the New Year.... though I do want to work on some new material in the Spring... I hope to get my hands on some new music soon..."

“I too am glad that we are friends Ms Melody, I don’t have many...but I count you firmly among them.”

Regulus smiles, gently squeezing her hand.

“Ahh, excellent. I look forward greatly to hearing this new music Ms Melody. If you desire I can escort you for another walk after your next performance? Either in human or wolf form.”

He grins, throwing his head back and showing his teeth to the sky.

“If you like I can ask my friends in Oxford to send me old music from the archives?”

"I would like that... both the walk, and the new music... it is very kind of you! I hope to get to London in the near future to see Iolanthe... but all music is always welcome..."

She hums happily.

"...but you must tell me what I may do for you in return... some more stories perhaps?"

“If you require an escort to London I may be able do so. Depending on when you are going.”

He frowns

“Although Lady Esme Might also require my time...Hmm...I will see what can be arranged if you desire an escort.”

Regulus nods, then grins.

“Some more story’s...or playing with me whilst in wolf form. I enjoy relaxing by acting like a overgrown puppy.”

He looks somewhat embarrassed at telling Christine and lowers his head, looking down at the ground.

"Thank you for your offer, but I shall have to get back to you... there are politics to be negotiated..."

She pulls a face, then giggles.

"Well, I shall see what I can do... both by way of stories and games... do you enjoy fetch? I already know that you like chasing games..."

She grins mischievously and gently prods his shoulder with one fingertip.

"...but you must be more careful... I could have pushed you in the river tonight - you were not paying attention! Count yourself lucky to have only been snowballed!"

She's teasing.

“Of course, if nothing else I should be able to escort you through Gangrel territory if nothing else.”

He gives her a wide grin

“I enjoy fetch, and relaxing in front of the fire. I will sometimes spend a whole night as a wolf whilst Esme writes letters and attends to her own buisness.”

He laughs

“As evidenced earlier, I do enjoy chasing games.”

He grins

“I’ll grant I was distracted earlier, thank you for not taking advantage of me.”

She waves a hand negligently.

"...ah, knowing my skills in the... fighting arts... you would have dodged and it would have been I who wound up in the river!"

She laughs.

"I shall see if I can acquire a suitable ball then."

They're approaching the theatre now. Just around the corner is the stage door, and Christine gently guides them that way.

"Does Lady Esme stay in Bath then? And will she be at the party?"

"Perhaps, but the simple physics of the situation would have weighed heavily against me Ms Melody. Your skills at remaining unobserved certainly put you in a good situation against those of us who do not have the power to extend our senses."

He chuckles, a fond smile on his face.

"Excellent Ms Melody..hmm? Lady Esme does reside in Bath, well...at least some of the time. I do believe she will be attending the party..or st least I hope so. It had been far too long since I last clapped eyes on her."

Regulus glances upwards then towards the stars. It seems to take an effort for him to bring his mind back down to the present. Stopping outside the stage door, he bows elaborately.

"I do hope you have had a pleasant evening Ms Melody."

"...I think that I might disagree with you there... but I most heartily pray that we never find ourselves in the situation of testing this outside play!"

She gives a gentle smile at Regulus' dreamy expression. She knows that feeling well, that sweet longing.

"I wish you much joy in your reunion, Mr Raven. And yes, it was very enjoyable! I hope that you found it equally entertaining?"
