Beautiful like a song

Cobbles glisten in the evening rain, leaf litter blocking the gutters and causing unshod feet to slip. Ragged men stagger home from the workhouses, brushed aside by the clicking wheels of the hansom cabs. Horses duck their heads, snorting plumes of wet, straw scented heat as the human traffic pushes past them and always, everywhere, above it and beyond it all, is the stink of the river Avon as its turgid flow seeps beneath the bridges. The river itself remains a dark, indifferent consciousness that allows anyone to stand by its weir and stare into the silent currents.

"Don't touch me!"

The voice is a snarl, lower pitched than her own. A male voice, with a foreign accent.

She wrenches her hand away from his grasp, pushes herself up onto her feet.

"...don't touch me..." she repeats, in her own voice, hard and cold and... dazed.

Her gaze is blank, her eyes full of madness.

Softly she starts singing to herself in a language he doesn't recognise as she walks calmly and quickly away, heading back to the theatre.

"Lamma bada yatathanna
Lamma bada yatathanna
Hubbi jamalu fatanna
Aman' aman' Aman' Aman

Aw ma bi LaHzu asarna
Aw ma bi LaHzu asarna
Aman' aman' Aman' Aman
Ghusnu thana Hinamal
Aman' aman' Aman' Aman"

His hands twitch, claws ready to spring forth and do battle with whatever lay inside Christine Daye. But no..he would hurt her in doing so. Smoothing away the frown creasing his face, he looks around to see if anyone was a witness.

Seeing no one, his form shrinks. Feathers sprout and quickly nought but a glossy black Raven stands where he once stood. The Raven caws softly, following Christine at a slight distance to ensure her safety.

As soon as Regulus' gaze is off Christine, her Obfuscate kicks in, and she vanishes from sight. Not even her singing can be heard.

The Raven takes flight, travelling ahead to the Theatre's stage door and then working back across the likely paths. Circling above the city, Regulus can feel the tension in his muscles.

You were trusted to guard her, but this is no physical threat.

The Raven lets out a caw, then dives into an alleyway. Less than a minute later rats come scurrying out to take up positions to watch the route. The Raven once more takes flight, watching.

As always, the first indication Regulus, or his rats, have of Christine's presence is her voice, singing softly.

"Waadi wa ya Hirati
Waadi wa ya Hirati
Man li shafeeashak wati
Aman' aman' Aman' Aman
Fil hubbi min lawaati
Aman' aman' Aman' Aman

Lamma bada yatathanna
Lamma bada yatathanna
Hubbi jamalu fatanna
Aman' aman' Aman' Aman"

Lost and safe in her music, she moves automatically. Up to the stage door, pulls the key from her pocket.

Her Obfuscate drops as she opens the door, slips quietly inside. There's the reassuring click of the lock behind her.

With that click of the lock, a Regulus turns towards home. The black Raven crossing the night sky like an omen, a faint caw being heard as the bird disappears.
