Looking for Mr Williamson

With it's half-broken and rickety sign that barely displays the bar's name, The Gentlemen's Respite noses its heaps of sin like a ropy mongrel among the bins, partly embarrassed, partly excited, partly disgusted, partly sad... It's owned by a bookie named Richie who welcomes anyone into his grimy pocket of the south. He has to: unlike The Long Drop, with its dangerously unique alcoholic concoctions and wide variety of underworld trade, Richie has relatively little to offer in the way of drinks. The mugs in The Respite are cobwebbed and cracked, the prices absurd. Richie has given up trying to sell anything. His prices are too high compared to The Long Drop's competitive variety. This bar has instead become a hub for whores to brandish their wares and loud tavern wenches to entertain passersby. It's always packed - a warm glow amid the rain and gloom - inside and out, with men drunk from the Long Drop having stumbled downwind to the catcalls of ladies. What The Respite has that the Long Drop doesn't is food, in good measure, and a selection of independent southern wenches who appreciate Richie's hands-off patronage. One (known as 'Anostaisier') is legendary; Richie even allows her to use his backroom for her work so it needn't be done in the darkened streets. He obviously gains a cut from all this.

Valentina quirks an eyebrow briefly, before giggling and smiling for the benefit of the room at large.

"I was hardly going to commit myself to paper before you'd agreed to the terms now, was I darling?"

The idea of carrying a pieces of paper pledging her promise in an area where she could potentially be attacked did not appeal for any number of reasons. In the same low tones she continues

"And for that matter, whores are not noted for their reading ability. So I strongly recommend either you produce paper and pen, or we go visit dear Mr Smith who has such things secreted on his person. You can write it, I shall be astounded at your abilities with the pen and you will patronise me by allowing me a go, whereby I shall sign. Assuming I agree with the words you write, anyway."

She smirks at him. If he was hoping to find her unprepared then he was sadly out of luck. Valentina has thought through this trip right to the end, over and over, trying to come up with every loophole and then plugging it.

"After that, a little more idle chit-chat and we shall part as those who have business with each other at a later date, I think." She adds thoughtfully.

She was, regretably, right.

The tapping stops, "Not much'll be need to be written. Just enough for the one with the tally to put his mark down."

He tilts his head to the side and back, quickly weighing things up, "But any terms you'd like, go ahead 'n tell me 'em. I'm sure they'll be fine, after all, look at who it's for."

Oh good, he could stop dithering and concentrate on the matter in hand. That was some small measure of relief to be sure.

"As I said already darling, I shall be in your debt to the tune of one trivial boon, in return for you doing me the service of delivering a letter I shall give you presently." This is still murmured low and pitched for his ears alone.

She smiles cheerfully at him. "So, do you have pen and paper? Or shall we wander across the room and bespeak Mr Smith?"

George figured it. "Deal." Simple and to the point.

Though moving from this spot seemed a little too.. vexing. "I'm sure he could come to us if ya just asked." He didn't feel like moving from his spot. Didn't feel like giving up the little things recently.

Valentina arches an eyebrow, consideringly. On the one hand, the sheer petty childishness makes her itch to slap him. On the other hand... Well, the deal is agreed to her terms, she's achieved the aim she came for and she's not in her territory. Discretion is the better part of valour and Valentina loathes being indiscreet.

So, filing the incident away for later she beams at George, the happy smile of a whore who feels that business may be concluded in her favour. Turning slightly she crooks a finger at the seated man, who nods, stands and strides across the room towards them.

He positions himself at her side, smiling amiably and nodding to George. He's seemingly relaxed, but still keeps a wary eye on the room.

"Darling, Mr Williamson here is a man of letters, isn't that exciting? We were wondering if you had paper and a writing implement upon your person so he could show me some of his handwriting?" She giggles up at the man, who shows no surprise at being asked to produce such things and merely reaches into a pocket and pulls out a couple of pieces of paper and a pencil stub and offers them to George.

Something broke her facade. Why would Valentina not want to bring her guard, or punter to the rest of the world, over to join them? It made little sence. Maybe it was the contradiction to her suggestion that made her faulter. Well, maybe he was a little unreasonable.

Now she wanted him to write. Well thinking up of things on the spot was one thing, this was another. "Thanks," he gives pause before taking the paper, "I never did catch ya name, what is it?"

A few moments to figure it.

Curious. Who cared about the name of a mortal bodyguard? Either George is gathering information, or, could it be that he was hesitating? Oh the deliciousness of the situation if he turned out to be illiterate! Her eyes sparkle with anticipation as she smiles benevolently, in her guise of Whore Watching The Men Talk.

"Smith" The man says shortly. "Pleased to meetcha." The social niceties observed, he shifts his position, to be better able to keep an eye on the rest of the room again. Valentina leans against him and he obligingly shifts to drape an arm around her shoulders.

She flutters her eyelashes invitingly at George. "The floor is yours Mr Williamson. Or, should I say, the paper?"

It was all in the spin. George keeps contact with Mr Smith as he tries to get back to his duty.

"What is it ya do, Mr Smith? When you're not bored in the night." He twiddles the pencil in his fingers. At least George could seem interested in the answer for it was the truth. That it served another purpose was just an added purpose.

For someone so keen to have the deal in writing George was taking his own sweet time. More support to the theory of illiteracy. Valentina slips her arm around Smith's waist, lightly and smiles up at him.

For his part he glances briefly at George, somewhat surprised to be addressed again. "A bit o' this, a bit o' that." It's a non-committal reply and after it's given he looks down to Valentina who smiles approvingly up at him, before scanning the room again.

"Come now Mr Williamson, you've not changed your mind about our little deal have you?" Valentina's tone is arch and flirtatious, just in case anyone nearby happens to be listening in.

Darn, his plan wasn't going to work as he'd hoped. George took note of his surroundings and who he was here.

"I'm just thinkin' what work you'd do that'd make ya keep paper with ya. I would guess somethin' you'd have to write down quickly." He leaned forward, sounding nearly entirtained, well, at least he was smiling."Have ya heard what's to be written on the paper?"

George palces the pencil down softly on the bar between them.
