Patience

With it's half-broken and rickety sign that barely displays the bar's name, The Gentlemen's Respite noses its heaps of sin like a ropy mongrel among the bins, partly embarrassed, partly excited, partly disgusted, partly sad... It's owned by a bookie named Richie who welcomes anyone into his grimy pocket of the south. He has to: unlike The Long Drop, with its dangerously unique alcoholic concoctions and wide variety of underworld trade, Richie has relatively little to offer in the way of drinks. The mugs in The Respite are cobwebbed and cracked, the prices absurd. Richie has given up trying to sell anything. His prices are too high compared to The Long Drop's competitive variety. This bar has instead become a hub for whores to brandish their wares and loud tavern wenches to entertain passersby. It's always packed - a warm glow amid the rain and gloom - inside and out, with men drunk from the Long Drop having stumbled downwind to the catcalls of ladies. What The Respite has that the Long Drop doesn't is food, in good measure, and a selection of independent southern wenches who appreciate Richie's hands-off patronage. One (known as 'Anostaisier') is legendary; Richie even allows her to use his backroom for her work so it needn't be done in the darkened streets. He obviously gains a cut from all this.

With all the noise and activity in the bar, another act of minor violence and a tankard hitting the floor doesn't seem to have been noticed.

“You are just the last in a long line of…” he takes a moment obviously working out the best word to use. “...children…to sit where you do. A little deference and respect for your elders and their property goes a long way.”

Tallow leans forward, resting his elbows on the table, the unimpressed tone still present as he continues.

“A lot of things happen in here that do not get noticed. I would not worry about me doing things to cause notice. Worry about what you do or say that result in things that cause notice.”

He leans back again.

“Tell Roger when you see him next that a bottle of good stuff is owed.”

What was a kine to be so rude? Probably jealousy and knowing Viktor wouldn't care how he interacted with George. Well George had seen a few like him in his time, too high above their perch.

"The message will get to 'im." He leans back, not noticing that he's imitating the one opposite him.

"So tell me, Tallow," he rests his hand on the table, "as a man of business, how much do you know 'bout the local papers 'n' presses?"

Tallow chuckles, low and darkly.

"You are either daft and slow or woefully un-informed."

There's a gesture made to the pocket that George put the letters into.

"Make sure they are delivered timely." he says before standing and simply making to leave.

That chuckle puts George horribly off edge. It reminded him of quill scrawl in dark tunnels. Like spoons dishing out an unpleasant subject.

He didn't say another word. George just sat there, still trying to make sense of it all.

Tallow slowly makes his way across the bar, rolling down each sleeve in turn and buttoning the cuff. He tips his cap to the bar keep before leaving.
