Looking for Mr Williamson

With it's half-broken and rickety sign that barely displays the bar's name, The Gentlemen's Respite noses its heaps of sin like a ropy mongrel among the bins, partly embarrassed, partly excited, partly disgusted, partly sad... It's owned by a bookie named Richie who welcomes anyone into his grimy pocket of the south. He has to: unlike The Long Drop, with its dangerously unique alcoholic concoctions and wide variety of underworld trade, Richie has relatively little to offer in the way of drinks. The mugs in The Respite are cobwebbed and cracked, the prices absurd. Richie has given up trying to sell anything. His prices are too high compared to The Long Drop's competitive variety. This bar has instead become a hub for whores to brandish their wares and loud tavern wenches to entertain passersby. It's always packed - a warm glow amid the rain and gloom - inside and out, with men drunk from the Long Drop having stumbled downwind to the catcalls of ladies. What The Respite has that the Long Drop doesn't is food, in good measure, and a selection of independent southern wenches who appreciate Richie's hands-off patronage. One (known as 'Anostaisier') is legendary; Richie even allows her to use his backroom for her work so it needn't be done in the darkened streets. He obviously gains a cut from all this.

There's a definite change in the mood at the table as the tankard is put down. The previous friendly atmosphere and conversation vanishes almost instantly and the other fellow at the table studiously studies the inside of his own tankard. Tallow looks at it and then looks back at the other person at the table, pretty much ignoring George and not making any attempt to take or accept the drink.

Well that wasn't quite what he was expecting. The other was studying his pint, avoiding being interacted with. Mr Tallow was certainly something else. Like domintor like ghoul... though he still wasn't sure.

"I got somethin' for ya to pass up, from 'er", his head gestured towards the door, "old father."

His hope was that Viktor as Harpy would reject the prestation and George would just have to give the letter back to Miroslav at Elysium. Give him more time. He still had to deal with the Malota problem. 'Course the letter of prestation had to get to Viktor first.

Tallow slowly begins to unbutton the cuff and roll up the sleeve on his right arm and when it's at his elbow he speaks again.

"I ain't your messenger and I ain't going to start. Best you run on boy and see to your own errands."

He begins to do the same on his left.

Definitely like domitor like ghoul. George didn't feel like getting decked tonight, let alone in this pub. George had stiffened. Well maybe it wasn't going to be that easy.

"That's a shame." He scratched his side. "Keep the pint."

He thought to leaving, unless Mr Tallow was going to interject.

Tallow finishes rolling up his left sleeve and waits for George to go away without saying anything further.

Definitely doesn't want to be decked, so he goes to leave the pub, nodding to the barman as he leaves.

Further south George goes tonight.
