A letter for Miss Delaney

Be it The Theatre Royal, The Ceryneian Theatre, or any of the smaller establishments serving to entertain the good people of Bath, here lies the feeling of sanctuary - of focus - and a tremble in the ether as the curtains rise, the music begins. Women touch themselves up - cosmetically - and their features glow and gleam: mouths like scimitars in claret, plum, sienna, smokily shadowed eyes with diamond hints and sapphire glints. Candle flames paint flickering reflections across the crystal chandeliers. Inside a Theatre is something pure, something beyond the Beast, immortalised in story and dance, the hard-won result of all the satirically polite personas, the rehearsals, the strict agents, the money and fame, the spotlights, the sweat, the pain and the blisters, the heartache and a final real catch-of-breath victory. Here is the playground of the performers.

A letter for Miss Delaney

My dear Miss Delaney,

This is just a quick note to let you know, if I do not see you to tell you in person, that I shall be taking advantage of my brief break in performances to pay a call upon my Lady Fortiscue at the House on the Hill.

Lady Fortiscue has charged Dr Taylor to escort me, so I shall be quite safe. I intend to only stay a day or so, though given the current unrest, I may be forced to linger longer. Should that happen I shall endeavour to send word.

Please, if you see Maestra, can you tell her I am well and safe and that I miss her terribly? I have not seen or heard from her since Elysium, and I am going out of my mind with worry!

With all the best wishes for the season,
I remain,
Your affectionate friend,
Christine

My dear Miss Delany,

I fear there has been a terrible misunderstanding somehow! I have returned, as I said I would, from my visit to the House on the Hill, ready and willing to rehearse and perform - only to find that Maestra has cancelled all my performances!

I am so sorry, Miss Delany, this must be terrible for you, and for the theatre! I am here, able and willing to perform, but I cannot find Maestra to ask her why she has cancelled all my dates. I am sure it is nothing, just a misunderstanding. It cannot be because of my visit to the House, for that was all arranged and approved at the recent Elysium.

Have you seen Maestra? Is she well? I have had nothing but a single note from her in weeks, and I am worried. Especially given that she must have been in the theatre at the same time as I to deliver it, but she would not speak to me.

Please, Miss Delany, you would tell me if there is anything I have done to earn her ire? I want to perform. I need to perform! The theatre needs me. Please, I pray we can fix this situation as soon as possible!

I also wished to speak to you about the possibility of a gala charity performance, in aid of the poor unfortunates hurt in the train incident. Do you think such a thing would be possible? Or useful? Normally I would ask Maestra about this, but I cannot find her. Without her I am completely adrift!

I am sorry, Miss Delany, for the trouble. I am sure it is just a misunderstanding. Thank you again for your kindness. And please, if you see Maestra, tell her I need to speak to her. And that I am worried for her.

I remain,
Your affectionate friend,
Christine
