Be still my soul

The town houses loom over cobbled, slippery streets and echo the clattering of horse drawn trams, the barking of stray dogs. Over it all stands the Abbey like a frozen grin, judging those below her and casting a shadow across the recently discovered Roman Baths. It's heathen decadence nestled against crushing piety. A mirror of the city itself. Some presences have their own gravity, their own radiation. So it is with The Abbey. Rebuilt in the 12th and 16th centuries, major restoration work was more recently carried out by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the 1860s - and allegedly a Kindred known as Tobias Ingleby. It is one of the largest examples of Perpendicular Gothic architecture in the West Country.

"Ah," she said, part exclamation, part sigh. "Sometimes it feels like perfection is so far away..."

Then her expression brightened, just a little.

"But then the Lord gives me one bright moment, and the wisdom of an elder to guide me."

She looked towards the door.

"I must go. I have errands to run and I must not be home to late. Thank you for your kindness and your wisdom."

She looked at him, an expression on her face suggesting that she was trying to decide something. Then:

"Fathe... Reverend. Might I presume terribly on our brief acquaintance...? Would you... give me your blessing?"

"That I would."

Tweedy cast his eyes over her head as she knelt, seeking inspiration.

"May God keep you in all your days;
May Christ comfort you in the darkness.
May the Spirit bring you peace.
May God the Holy Trinity drive all darkness from you
and pour upon you blessing and light. Amen."

He walked with her a few paces toward the door, before giving his adieu.

"Good night, Miss Daye. We'll see you again soon, I hope."
"Some a' us are come late to our callin'."

Christine's eyes closed as she received the Reverend's blessing, her own lips moving in silent prayer. When the blessing was finished, she rose to her feet and smiled her own farewell.

"The Lord bless you and keep you, Reverend. Until we meet again."

With one last look around the Abbey and humming once more "Be Still My Soul", she left the building, into the night and off to her errands.
