Are they a thing that can happen? Are they represented stat wise? As a Retainer? As a Traited item?

Pretty sure that they are dealt with in the same way as any other retainer.

They certainly are!
Advantage - can't be affected by dominate!
Disadvantages - really really dumb.
Just give them specialities that are appropriate, e.g. stealth but not e.g. academics.
